In the article 《Innovative application of RFID technology in the apparel and luggage industry》, we can understand that RFID in anti-counterfeiting and traceability, intelligent inventory, fast to find pieces of the business value of the highlight, but RFID technology to bring the value of the brand is not only here, but also help the brand to promote the sustainable development, promote efficient recycling and other environmental protection operations.

1. Industry Trends: RFID Technology in Sustainable Packaging

RFID tags embedded in cups or packaging can track the number of times an item is used, the path to recycling, or incentivize users to return it through a deposit system. For example, a consumer returning an RFID-tagged cup can scan the tag to receive cash back or points.

Examples

McDonald’s: has piloted an RFID reusable cup system in the US and UK, where cups are automatically recognized and deposits refunded when users return them.

Starbucks: partnered with Closed Loop Partners to test a reusable cup system, with part of the pilot involving digital tracking technology (e.g., QR codes or RFID).

PepsiCo recently partnered with Vytal Global, a German provider of reusable packaging software, to design a recyclable cup for catering needs. The 0.5-liter cup is made of polypropylene with 0.3-liter and 0.4-liter capacity markings and is equipped with RFID tags designed to efficiently manage cup dispensing and recycling.

According to Tim Breker, CEO of Vytal: “Users have a free loan period of 14 days, and if the cups are not returned within this time, they will have to pay a purchase fee of €4.” He estimates that each cup can be recycled an average of 125 times.
And creating a recyclable system requires digitally collecting, cleaning, redistributing & tracking, which is a complex process. That’s why the high-speed read/write and unlimited read/write characteristics of RFID technology play an irreplaceable role. Through the analysis of RFID data, you can develop the cup of the regional distribution strategy, but also can predict the life of the cup, in advance of the recycling and reuse of the preparation, reduce resource waste.
PepsiCo said the cups will debut at branches of fast-food chain Pizza Hut and will also be rolled out at large events in the future. The company plans to distribute about 100,000 of these soft drink containers over the next two years. PepsiCo has been making continuous efforts in the field of sustainability, and the company has previously introduced bottles with “No Bottle Label” and “Recycle Well” upgraded eco-labels.

2.McDonald’s RFID recycled tableware

McDonald's RFID recycled tableware

McDonald’s, the global fast food giant, has long been focusing on and practicing sustainable development strategies as well. McDonald’s is gradually switching from disposable tableware for everyday use to reusable tableware containers across the board, with the aim of eliminating unnecessary food packaging, establishing a circular economy model, and conserving natural resources.
With the implementation of the AGEC regulation (Anti-Waste for a Circular Economy, a French regulation on circular economy and combating waste adopted in 2020), McDonald’s France is further enhancing the effective management and comprehensive application of recycled tableware based on RFID technology. Transitioning from disposable tableware to recyclable mode, store loss prevention and inventory management will also become one of the key factors for fast food industry to realize efficient operation management.
For the fast food industry, special RFID tags can be used to meet food safety, heat and water resistance, and can be directly applied to water cups and other containers.
Handheld machines, label printers, readers and other hardware equipment, as well as data tracking platform to build, visualization of tableware type, real-time quantity, replenishment needs and other information, accurate positioning of reusable tableware location, to prevent accidental loss.

In recent years, with the postal industry “9792 project” start, further promoting the green management of express packaging.
Major courier companies began to try “recyclable transit box + RFID” program: embedded in the transit bag RFID tags, not only to achieve the parcel transit, lost, regional flow, audit and other information collection, but also the number of times the bag can be used for statistical purposes.
The traditional courier transit bag, although low-cost, but each time you need to seal, breakage, can only be used once, can be recycled transit bag can be used a hundred times, in an effective way to improve the efficiency of the transit center in and out of the warehouse at the same time, but also to reduce waste, reduce pollution, and promote the goal of environmental protection.
RFID solutions are essentially future-oriented, able to adapt to industry changes and technological advances. RFID technology is becoming the center stage of some of the industry’s sustainable development plans, leading the transformation from disposable service items to reusable service items.

4.Conclusion

Pepsi has demonstrated its commitment to innovation in sustainable packaging with the launch of RFID-enabled recyclable cups. This technology not only improves recycling efficiency, but also encourages consumers to participate in environmental actions through digital tracking, further promoting the development of a circular economy. With the growing global concern over plastic pollution and resource waste, the application of smart technologies such as RFID will become an important direction for the sustainable development of the beverage industry. Pepsi’s initiative not only reflects the company’s environmental responsibility, but also sets a model for the industry to follow. In the future, we expect more companies to adopt similar technologies to build a greener and smarter consumer ecosystem.

5.Frequently Asked Questions

5.1 What are Pepsi’s RFID-enabled recyclable cups?

These are reusable or recyclable cups embedded with RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) tags, allowing them to be tracked throughout their lifecycle—promoting efficient recycling and reducing waste.

5.2 How does RFID technology improve sustainability?

A: RFID enables automated tracking of cup returns, ensures proper recycling, and can incentivize consumers (e.g., discounts for returning cups), reducing single-use plastic waste.

5.3 Where are these cups being tested/launched?

A: While Pepsi has not disclosed specific locations, similar RFID cup programs (e.g., McDonald’s, Starbucks) have been piloted in the U.S., U.K., and Germany—likely markets for Pepsi’s initiative.

5.4 Can consumers reuse these cups, or are they recycled after one use?

Depending on design, some may be sanitized and reused (like in fast-food chains), while others are recycled. The RFID tag helps manage both processes.

5.5 What’s the environmental impact of this initiative?

By reducing single-use cup waste and improving recycling rates, Pepsi’s RFID cups could cut CO₂ emissions and plastic pollution, aligning with its 2025 sustainability goals.
