Recently, Jin Meng’s team at the John Hopcroft Center for Computer Science, School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has made significant progress in the field of Internet of Things (IoT). Its research result “Fast, Fine-grained, and Robust Grouping of RFIDs” (High-speed and Precise RFID Spatial Clustering) has been accepted by ACM MobiCom 2023, the top conference in the field of networked systems. This breakthrough technology will greatly promote the application of RFID technology in large-scale deployment scenarios such as warehousing, logistics and retail.
ACM MobiCom, as the world’s top academic conference in the field of mobile computing and networking, has an extremely rigorous review process, and the acceptance rate of each paper is usually between 15% and 20%. The fact that this research result of Jinmeng’s team is able to stand out from the rest is a clear indication of the cutting-edge and innovative nature of its technology.
RFID technology, as one of the ten most influential technologies in the 21st century, has a wide range of applications in logistics, retail and other fields. However, how to achieve efficient and accurate identification and localization of a large number of tags in large-scale deployment scenarios has always been a problem in the industry. The TaGroup technology proposed by the Golden Dream team has successfully solved this problem. TaGroup technology realizes simultaneous localization of multiple targets by innovatively proposing concurrent scanning of tags and using concurrent signal characteristics. This technology also explores the mutual reflection phenomenon during concurrent transmission of RFID tags, and for the first time proposes the mutual reflection channel extraction technique to construct the inter-tag channel, and constructs the first RFID location relationship spatio-temporal graph model based on the inter-tag channel. This technique not only realizes concurrent tag reading and improves the scanning speed of large-scale tags, but also uses the inter-tag channel to expand the signal characteristics and realize accurate positioning.

Experiments show that TaGroup is able to complete centimeter-level relative position estimation of hundreds of tags within 3 seconds, which greatly facilitates the process of item scanning and tracking in logistics and retail scenarios. This technological breakthrough not only liberates manpower and improves efficiency, but also provides new ideas and methods for the application of RFID technology in large-scale deployment scenarios.

It is expected to broaden the application scenarios of RFID in many fields.
The “TaGroup” technology developed by Jinmeng team is expected to broaden the application scenarios of RFID in many fields due to its efficient and highly accurate spatial clustering capability. The author can think of the following:
Medical and health field:
Medical device rfid location tracking: in hospitals and medical institutions, a large number of medical devices need to be accurately tracked and managed. taGroup technology can help medical institutions to achieve this goal, ensuring the availability and safety of equipment.
Patient Monitoring and Health Management: By tagging patients with RFID-enabled devices, healthcare organizations can track the location and health status of their patients in real-time. taGroup technology can improve the efficiency and accuracy of patient monitoring and health management.
Warehouse and Logistics Management:
Item rfid Location tracking: In large warehouses or logistics centers, thousands of items need to be accurately tracked and located.TaGroup technology can cluster a large number of RFID tags in a short period of time, enabling accurate location estimation of items. This can greatly improve the efficiency of warehouse and logistics management and reduce manual errors.

Real-time inventory management: By tracking the movement and location of items in real-time, TaGroup technology can help organizations achieve real-time inventory management. This not only reduces inventory backlogs and waste, but also ensures timely replenishment to meet customer demand.
Improve Logistics Efficiency: In the logistics process, fast and accurate identification and location of goods is critical to ensure logistics efficiency and on-time delivery. taGroup technology can help logistics companies achieve this goal and improve customer satisfaction.
Retail & Commercial:
Smart Shelf Management: In retail stores, smart shelves allow for real-time tracking of inventory and sales of merchandise through RFID technology. taGroup technology can further improve the accuracy and efficiency of smart shelves, helping retailers to better manage inventory and merchandise displays.
Customer Shopping Experience: Retailers can enhance the customer shopping experience by providing personalized shopping recommendations and navigation services, and TaGroup technology can help retailers track customer location and behavior in the store in real time, providing data to support personalized services.
The cheapest high-precision positioning technology has emerged?
TaGroup technology realizes simultaneous localization of multiple targets by concurrently scanning RFID tags and using concurrent signal characteristics. The core of this technology lies in an in-depth study of the mutual reflection phenomenon during concurrent transmission of RFID tags, and the first mutual reflection channel extraction technique is proposed to construct inter-tag channels. Based on these channels, the research team constructed the first RFID location relationship spatio-temporal graph model, which provides a large amount of channel information for the sensing system, thus realizing efficient and accurate localization of a large number of tags.
What’s more, compared with traditional positioning technologies, such as differential positioning technology (DGNSS) and real-time kinematic positioning technology (RTK), RFID technology has lower cost and maintenance difficulty.
Differential positioning technology can realize centimeter-level high-precision positioning, but it needs to rely on multiple reference stations and complex solving process, which is costly and difficult to maintain. Real-time dynamic positioning technology has real-time and high-precision characteristics, but in urban areas by the satellite signal blockage of the impact of the larger, and there is also the problem of high cost. RFID technology is expected to become a more affordable high-precision positioning solution by virtue of its low cost, easy to deploy, high reliability and other advantages.
