The application of RFID technology in the livestock industry has two main aspects, on the one hand, it is the establishment of livestock management system for the fine breeding of animals, on the other hand, it is the establishment of animal tracking and management system. More than 20 countries and regions around the world on the production process of food are using RFID technology for tracking and tracing, and has obtained good results.
The RFID-based traceability system identifies and interconnects the management objects in the supply chain of animal growth, meat processing, storage and retailing in the aquaculture industry, and then expresses these identifications with barcodes and manual readability. In the event of a health and safety problem with a meat product, it can be traced through these markings to accurately narrow down the scope of the safety problem, identify the link where the problem occurs, and trace back to the geographic location of the relevant place of origin, slaughtering or processing organization. This will block the flow of goods from these places into the market, and then effective management can be carried out.
BBQ Chicken Project
The chicken farms of the Anhui Chaan Township BBQ Chicken Project are quite extensive, and are not chicken farms in the traditional sense of the word, but rather a large area of land where chickens are raised in a free-range manner.
All along, the rural farming industry has long been at the bottom of the industrial chain, the biggest constraint is the lack of trust between rural and urban areas due to information asymmetry, and the rural areas are unable to transform their green and non-polluting resources into brand advantages. Blockchain, Internet of Things and other technologies can solve this problem.
For example, BBQ Chicken mainly solves these pain points of rural chicken farming: no sales channels, low profit, low brand influence, etc.. BBQ Chicken has also launched the concepts of “making the chicken’s life transparent and visible” and “blockchain poverty alleviation of free-range chicken”, which on the one hand increase the popularity of BBQ Chicken, and on the other hand establish the sales channels to solve the difficulty of rural free-range chicken without sales channels.
In addition to the use of blockchain and other technologies, the BBQ Chicken project also introduces the agricultural insurance of property insurance companies to underwrite the risk of chicken farming. Previously, when farmers insured their farmed chickens for agricultural insurance, risk assessors needed to check on-site how many farming assets there were, assess whether these chickens would die, and how much income loss they would bring……. Due to the high assessment process and cost, farmers were not motivated to take out insurance, and the insurance companies did not have any incentive to underwrite it.
And blockchain provides a new way of thinking for agricultural insurance underwriting: as farmers’ chickens adopt blockchain anti-counterfeiting traceability, how many chickens farmers raise and how much mortality they have had in the last three months …… These data can be known in real time as long as they are available on the blockchain, which reduces the risk of risk control of insurance and credit as well as the cost of assessment, and increases insurers’ interest in farmers and farming assets underwriting enthusiasm.
In addition to agricultural insurance, based on the asset data on the blockchain, banks can carry out risk assessment of lending to farmers, which also promotes the solution of agricultural farming loan problems, so that the threshold for entrepreneurial farmers to obtain financial services is greatly reduced, and rural entrepreneurship is promoted.
Anti-counterfeiting and Traceability System for BBK Chicken
The BBK chicken anti-counterfeiting and traceability system mainly includes three systems: data collection system, data storage and uploading system, and data verification system.
01 Data Collection System: Each chicken has a unique ID.
The data collection system mainly relies on the IOT device (RFID chicken tag) worn on the chicken’s leg to collect data (red place in the following figure). The chicken tag contains a pedometer module, a localization module, a communication module and so on.
Each chicken tag will have a system generated unique ID and a QR code that can be scanned. The chicken tag carabiner starts working mode once it is closed and is not removable. Once removed, the electronic linking device inside the carabiner will be damaged, thus losing the data collection function.
Once the chicken tag is in working mode, it collects and uploads the chicken’s movement steps and coordinates in real time and sends them to the communication base station at regular intervals. The communication base station usually contains a primary base station and a number of secondary base stations, which are deployed in a grid-like fashion and are responsible for collecting data messages sent by chicken tags that are active in their vicinity and summarizing the data to be sent to the primary base station. The primary base station then sends all the messages to the message middleware. As a large number of IoT devices may generate massive data content, the message middleware can act as a flood storage pool here to cut down the peaks and fill in the valleys.
02 Data storage uplinking system: content cannot be tampered with
This system needs to subscribe to the messages in the message middleware and store and uplink the messages.
Storage: because the amount of data generated by IoT devices is very large, and the limitations of the blockchain’s own storage lead to the inability to directly store all the data directly to the chain, so there is a need for an intermediate storage medium to store the original data.
The intermediate deposit medium can be a distributed file system (e.g., OSS, HDFS), or a decentralized file system (e.g., IPFS). For testing, a local file system can also be used. This system will regularly aggregate a certain amount of messages to generate files and store them on a file storage medium.
On-chaining: the system will use the SHA-256 algorithm to calculate the data digest of the stored file, and get the digital signature of this file (since the digital signature of the file is a digest of the original content of the file, any modification to the original content of the file will generate a new file signature).
Then the system initiates a blockchain transaction, and puts the storage path of the file, the digital signature of the file, and the address of the previous transaction (PreHash) into the Remarks field of the transaction for uploading. Once the blockchain transaction is confirmed by the consensus of each node, it is broadcasted and stored in the ledger of each node, and the content stored in the transaction cannot be tampered with.
03 Data Query and Verification System: Scanning Code to Know Information
After consumers buy chickens, by scanning the chicken license QR code on the chicken’s legs (or RFID chip information in the induction device), you can query the entire life cycle of the breeding product information, including the entry time, steps, coordinates, time out of the pen, slaughter time, quarantine institutions, logistics information, blockchain last transaction address (LastHash) and so on.
Advantages of RFID technology in the application of animal husbandry industry
Electronic labeling management has been used in Europe and the United States for several years, and has become a showcase of technology. In addition to the application of automatic rationing and yield statistics within the enterprise in feeding, but also can be used for animal identification, disease monitoring, quality control and tracking of animal breeds, etc. The advantages of RFID technology in the animal husbandry industry are mainly the following points:
01 non-contact identification, real-time effective data collection
RFID technology is the use of non-contact radio frequency identification, will be placed in the animal body or on the body of the electronic identification of the data within the collection and systematic management, is to grasp the animal’s health status and control of animal epidemics occurring extremely effective management methods.
02 waterproof, can be applied to the animal body
The use of low-frequency tags, can penetrate the water and animal body, water and metal insensitive, regardless of whether the label is placed in the animal body or placed on the body, can be easily and quickly read.
03 Unique number, not easy to forge, easy to manage
When the animal is born, the electronic label is placed on the animal, and the electronic label is one-time use, unified number and unique number. Through the traceable management of individual animals, precision feeding, improve meat quality; at the same time, health warning and quality monitoring, greatly increase the economic benefits of enterprises.
04 Combined with information technology, conducive to tracking management
Through the supporting software management program, the whole cycle of its growth is monitored. Such as whether it is stocked in a pollution-free natural environment, soil, water, air and other indices are up to standard, the use of veterinary drugs and additives, whether the feed has been contaminated by pesticides or residual additives, etc., and record it in different periods of time in the pasture where the stocking, as well as its vaccination, health status and other important information. When the food animal reaches the standard of slaughtering, the slaughterhouse will strictly check the “quality file” of the animal, and only after passing the strict inspection can the animal be slaughtered, and the “file” will be archived for future “quality traceability”. The “file” will be archived for future “quality traceability”.
