What’s The NFC On My Phone

Table of Contents

Many people hide the “NFC” function in their phones but have never actually used it, unaware that it can replace access cards, bus cards, and quickly transfer files. In fact, NFC is a “miracle tool” that enhances the convenience of life. Mastering its functions and usage can reduce carry on items and make travel and business easier. The following article will comprehensively dissect the core functions and usage scenarios of mobile NFC, helping you unlock new skills for your phone.

1.Basic understanding of NFC: definition and working principle

1.1 What is NFC

NFC, also known as Near Field Communication, is a short-range (usually no more than 10 centimeters) wireless communication technology that enables fast data transmission and interaction between devices. The NFC function of mobile phones requires hardware support (built-in NFC chip). Currently, most mid to high end mobile phones are equipped with this function, and some entry-level models are gradually adding it.

1.2 The working principle of NFC

NFC achieves data transmission through electromagnetic induction, without the need for complex pairing. Simply bring your phone close to NFC enabled devices (such as access card readers, bus gates, another NFC phone) to trigger connection and interaction. It supports three modes: “card simulation”, “point-to-point”, and “card reader”, with different modes corresponding to different usage scenarios, meeting diverse needs.

2. Core functions of mobile NFC: 5 practical scenarios

2.1 Alternative physical cards: access cards, bus cards, bank cards

Access control card: If the community or company access control supports NFC, you can add an “access control card” in the mobile “Wallet” app (some encrypted access control cards need to be decrypted first, specific requirements of the access control system shall prevail). After adding, place the mobile phone near the access control card reader to open the door without carrying a physical access control card.

Bus card: Open the corresponding city’s bus card (such as “Beijing One Card” or “Shanghai Public Transport Card”) in the mobile “wallet”, recharge and place the phone near the bus/subway gate to swipe the card without unlocking the screen. It is more portable than physical cards and can also view consumption records.

Bank card: Some banks support “NFC flash payment”. Bind the bank card in the mobile “wallet” and place the phone near the POS machine that supports flash payment when making purchases. After verifying the fingerprint or password, payment can be made without carrying a physical bank card.

2.2 Point to point transfer: Quickly share files

Two phones that support NFC can quickly transfer photos, contacts, files, etc. through “point-to-point mode”. Turn on the NFC function of both phones, bring the backs of the two phones close together, and the phones will automatically recognize and pop up the “Transfer” option. Select the content to be transferred, confirm it, and quickly send it. It is suitable for instant sharing of small files (such as single photos or contacts), without the need to connect to WiFi or Bluetooth.

2.3 Card reader mode: Read card information

Switch the NFC function of the mobile phone to “card reader mode” (some phones need to enable it in “Settings NFC”), place the physical card (such as bus card, bank card, access card) close to the back of the phone, and the phone can read the basic information of the card (such as bus card balance, last four digits of bank card number), making it easy to check the card status without the need for other devices.

2.4 Device connection: Quickly pair Bluetooth/WiFi

Some smart devices, such as Bluetooth speakers, headphones, and printers, support NFC pairing. By enabling the NFC function of both the phone and the device, placing the phone near the NFC sensing area of the device can automatically complete Bluetooth pairing or WiFi connection without manually searching for the device or entering a password, simplifying the connection steps.

2.5 Smart tags: trigger preset commands

Purchase NFC smart tags (small circular or square stickers), set commands in the “NFC Tools” app on your phone (such as “Turn on WiFi+turn on music when approaching the tag” and “Set mute mode when approaching the tag”), stick the tag on the desktop, car door, etc., and then bring your phone close to the tag to automatically trigger preset commands, achieving “one touch, one reach” intelligent operation.

3.How to use NFC on mobile phones: enable and set it up

3.1 Enable NFC function

Enter the “Settings” of the phone, find the “NFC” or “Connect and Share” option (different brands have slightly different locations, such as Huawei in “Settings – More Connections” and Xiaomi in “Settings – Connect and Share”), click to turn on the “NFC” switch, and some phones can also turn on “NFC touch payment” to set the default payment method (such as Alipay, WeChat, and mobile wallet).

3.2 Add and manage cards

In the “Wallet” app on your phone, click “Add Card”, select the type of card you want to add (access card, bus card, bank card), follow the prompts to complete the card information entry or binding (such as selecting a city and recharging for the bus card, and entering and verifying the card number for the bank card). After adding, you can manage it uniformly in the “Wallet” and support card activation, deactivation, and deletion operations.

4.Precautions for using NFC: Avoid problems and risks

4.1 Confirm device support and sensing distance

Before using NFC function, it is necessary to confirm that the other party’s device (such as access card reader, bus gate, another mobile phone) supports NFC, and to bring the NFC sensing area on the back of the phone (usually located in the upper middle position of the phone back) close to the device, with a sensing distance controlled within 10 centimeters. If it is too far away, it will cause recognition failure.

4.2 Protect card information security

When binding sensitive cards such as bank cards and access cards, the phone needs to set a lock screen password or biometric (fingerprint, face) to prevent others from impersonating card information after losing the phone; Do not read unfamiliar cards at will, and do not transmit sensitive data to unfamiliar devices to protect personal information security.

4.3 Resolve the issue of recognition failure

If the NFC function recognition fails, first check whether the NFC on the phone is turned on and whether the sensing distance is too far; Check if there is a metal protective case on the back of the phone again. The metal case will block NFC signals, and you need to remove the protective case before trying again; If it still fails, you can restart the phone or reset the NFC settings in “Settings – NFC” to restore normal functionality.

In summary, mobile NFC is a versatile and convenient tool that can replace physical cards, quickly transfer files, and connect to smart devices, covering multiple scenarios in daily life. Mastering its usage can reduce carry on items and make daily operations more efficient.
